Bourbon whiskey
Used in 2 recipes on RecipeWiki.
Bourbon whiskey is an American spirit made mostly from corn and aged in new charred oak barrels, which give it notes of vanilla, caramel and toasted wood. This page also covers rye whiskey, its spicier, drier cousin, since the cocktails here accept either. Bourbon reads rounder and sweeter in a drink, rye sharper and more peppery. Both are the backbone of the Old Fashioned, stirred with sugar and bitters over ice, and of the Whisky Sour, shaken with lemon and sugar. For mixing, a bottle of around 45% abv is worth seeking out, because the extra strength stands up to dilution and sugar.
