Rolled oat
Used in 3 recipes on RecipeWiki.
Rolled oats are whole oat groats that have been steamed and pressed flat, which lets them cook quickly while keeping more chew than fine porridge oats. They taste mild, sweet and nutty, more so when toasted. Simmered slowly in milk or water they turn creamy as their starch releases, the basis of Creamy Oat Porridge; baked with honey they crisp into the clusters of Toasted Honey Granola, and rubbed into butter and flour they give a crumble topping its rubble. Stir porridge often and add a pinch of salt, which brings out the sweetness. Oats are sometimes processed alongside wheat, so check the packet if that matters.
