Grenadine
Used in 4 recipes on RecipeWiki.
Grenadine is a sweet, ruby-red syrup traditionally made from pomegranate, which gives it its name, from the French word for the fruit. Good grenadine tastes tart and fruity under the sugar; many commercial bottles are simply coloured sugar syrup with flavouring, so check the label for pomegranate juice. Because it is denser than most spirits and juices, it sinks, settling into a red layer when poured last. In the Hurricane, Bahama Mama, Singapore Sling and Zombie it adds colour and a rounded, berry-like sweetness. A quick homemade version is pomegranate juice simmered with sugar until syrupy, which keeps for a few weeks in the fridge.

Recipes with grenadine

Bahama Mama
Two rums with coconut, pineapple and grenadine, shaken and poured tall over ice so the red sinks through it.

Hurricane
Dark and light rum with passion fruit and citrus, sweet and red and considerably stronger than it looks.

Singapore Sling
Gin, cherry brandy and pineapple built long over ice — the hotel-bar drink that survived a century of people getting it wrong.

Zombie
Three rums, two juices, falernum and absinthe over crushed ice — the strongest drink on any tiki menu, and built to taste as though it is not.
